Dvar Torah (n.) (plural: Divrei Torah): Literally “word(s) of Torah,” this refers to a (sometimes original) Torah thought that is shared with others.
Definition from Chabad.org.
By presenting a Torah-related exposition in the form of a highly personalized comic narrative, I simultaneously engage in and challenge an existing mode of discourse within a particular Jewish learning context. The incorporation of classic rabbinic commentaries establishes credibility within the Dvar Torah genre. At the same time, the hierarchies of authority and knowledge are questioned through the creative interpretation and unconventional format, which introduce a diverse range of modalities that engage in intergenerational dialogue and increase the accessibility of shared traditions. This raises the issue of whose voices belong in the Jewish canon, and reframes the expectations of which kinds of stories are appropriate for the medium of comics.
